In short, heart rate variability is the variation in the time intervals between heart beats. Your heart does not beat evenly, which means that the time lapsed from one beat to the next varies.

So if your heart rate is 60 bpm, it won’t beat every second on the dot. Instead, your heartbeat will look something like this:
